Chinese battery giant CATL revealed new battery products at the Munich Motor Show aimed at the European market: faster charging in cold climates, extended lifespan, and enhanced recycling & swapping technology. CATL also expressed willingness to support European battery startups.

CATL currently controls about 45% of the European battery market, thanks to investments in Germany, Hungary, and a planned new plant in Spain expected to begin operations by end-2026.

The new battery products introduced include features that allow faster charging in extreme cold, longer service life, and options for battery swapping or module replacement, along with improved recycling methods.

CATL has indicated openness to forming joint ventures with European battery companies (for example with France’s Automotive Cells Company), as part of its strategy to bolster regional battery production.

Challenges remain: high production costs, labor skills shortage, and China's regulatory controls over sharing advanced battery tech abroad are among the issues to address.
