OpenAI has introduced Sora 2, a cutting-edge video and audio generation model that's more physically accurate and realistic. Accompanying it is a new iOS app enabling users to create and share AI-powered videos, emphasizing creativity over consumption.

On September 30, 2025, OpenAI announced Sora 2, its flagship model for video and audio generation. More physically accurate, realistic, and controllable than prior versions, Sora 2 can produce synchronized dialogue, sound effects, and model complex physical dynamics—like Olympic gymnastics routines, backflips on a paddleboard, or triple axels with a cat. It follows intricate instructions across multiple shots, maintains world states, and excels in realistic, cinematic, or anime styles. The model also integrates real-world elements, such as inserting people into generated scenes with accurate appearance and voice from a short video-and-audio clip. Improvements include better adherence to physics laws, reduced unrealistic object morphing, and enhanced world simulation through large-scale video pre- and post-training, significantly boosting AI's understanding of the physical world.
Alongside the model, OpenAI launched the "Sora" iOS app, allowing users to create, remix videos, discover content in a customizable feed, and use a "cameos" feature to insert themselves or friends into scenes. It's initially rolling out invite-only in the U.S. and Canada, with free access and generous limits, expanding soon. ChatGPT Pro subscribers get an experimental higher-quality Sora 2 Pro. Sora 2 is also available at sora.com and via API, while Sora 1 Turbo remains accessible. The app prioritizes creation, with feeds defaulting to followed users' content and inspiration videos, not optimizing for engagement time. Safety features include user-controlled feeds, natural language-adjustable recommenders, teen-specific generation limits, parental controls via ChatGPT, and cameo permissions. Human moderators handle bullying reports, and monetization is optional for extra generations to manage compute demands, with user well-being as the core focus.
