Google's Willow quantum chip delivers the first verifiable quantum advantage with the Quantum Echoes algorithm, running 13,000 times faster than supercomputers. Sundar Pichai announces the milestone, drawing congratulations from Elon Musk; opens doors for drug discovery and materials science.

Google has made a revolutionary stride in quantum computing technology. The company's Willow quantum chip executed the newly developed Quantum Echoes algorithm—also known as OTOC or out-of-order time correlator—13,000 times faster than the best classical algorithm on one of the world's fastest supercomputers. This algorithm elucidates interactions between atoms in molecules using nuclear magnetic resonance, with results that are verifiable, repeatable by other quantum computers, or confirmable through experiments. Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared the breakthrough on X, stating, "This new algorithm can explain interactions between atoms in a molecule using nuclear magnetic resonance, paving a path towards potential future uses in drug discovery and materials science." Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded, "Congrats. Looks like quantum computing is becoming relevant." The advancement holds immense potential for studying information spread in quantum systems like molecules, magnets, or black holes, marking a pivotal step toward practical quantum computing applications. Experts highlight that this verifiable quantum advantage accelerates the transition from theoretical to real-world innovations in the field.
